Police have launched a manhunt after a mysterious crime spree ended with a man dead and another fighting for his life.

The two incidents came minutes apart in New South Wales, Australia with a gunman not yet in custody. The attack happened in Eungella, just west of Murwillumbah on Wednesday. Paramedics arrived at a property to find a man had been shot.

Despite their attempts to save him, the 41-year-old died at the scene. He has not yet been formally identified. A second man, understood to be 38, was later hospitalised and he remains under urgent medical care for a gunshot wound.
