Navy veteran Paul Allers was recently named Cheboygan County's Hometown Hero for the month of December.

Allers served as a submariner from 1959-1963.

According to the Cheboygan County Veterans Subcommittee, Allers has been a member of the American Legion Post 159 for 46 years where he has served as commander several times and is a member of the Honor Guard. Allers was in the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 25 years and was a senior captain for Arnold Line Ferry.

Allers has also served on the Mackinaw City Planning Commission for 12 years and has volunteered to help with a disabled veteran support team and various children’s programs.
