FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - NIPSCO is under investigation for improperly charging natural gas customers, according to documents from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission that were obtained by 21Alive.

The IURC says NIPSCO found an issue with “a not-insignificant number of its natural gas meters.” The problem stems from new technology being installed on 870,000 meters in northern Indiana designed to allow NIPSCO to get gas readings without meter readers having to drive around.

The IURC investigation will force NIPSCO to share more data with regulators so they can ensure any issues are resolved. State regulators claim NIPSCO found the error and issued bill credits but didn’t tell customers there was an issue.
