December 3, 1863 - Despite a declaration from President Abraham Lincoln that Council Bluffs was to be the eastern end for the Union Pacific, officials with the railroad instead made Omaha the starting point.
They broke ground on the project on Dec. 3, 1863.
However, a lack of funding delayed the project, and the first rails weren’t laid down until 1865.
