SYRACUSE, Ind. (WPTA) - A 69-year-old Kosciusko man died after attempting to rescue his dog from a pond earlier this week.
Emergency responders were dispatched to a pond near the 70000 block of County Road 29 in Syracuse at about 4 p.m. on Monday. An initial investigation shows Phillip Hoover was attempting to rescue his dog from the ice-covered pond when he fell through.
He was recovered from the pond and taken to an area hospital where he died. The dog was recovered and survived without injuries.
Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating. They remind citizens to assume no ice is safe ice, to test ice before going out on it, to have safety measures in place before going out and to inform others before going out.
