An 18-year-old Guelph man turned a family dispute into a fight with police.

Guelph police said on Tuesday, at approximately 10:10 a.m., officers were called to a family dispute on Cole Road. Officers spoke to a man at the home who was not supposed to be there and the man, police said, pushed an officer and then wrapped his arms around the officer’s shoulders and neck.

The man was detained and during the struggle, a folding knife fell from his pocket, police said.

He was charged with assault police to resist arrest, and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in court Jan. 6.
