BROOKLYN — A BROOKLYN HIGH school student whose summer detention sparked criticism has been released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention after securing asylum, reports Patch .

Mamadou Mouctar Diallo, 20, a Brooklyn Frontiers High School student originally from Guinea, was detained by ICE on Aug. 4 following a routine court check-in, drawing protests and calls for action from local leaders and educators.

Diallo’s attorneys at The Door and Legal Aid won his asylum claim in late November based on political persecution and ethnicity. He was freed three days later from a Pennsylvania facility and has returned home to Brooklyn.
