The number of youth charged with homicide in Canada rose in 2024 from the year before, according to newly released Statistics Canada data on homicide trends across the country last year.

In 2024, the number of people under 18 years old accused of homicide was 72, according to the StatCan report. That number increased by around 10 per cent from 2023, when 65 youths were accused.

The increase drove up the overall rate of youths charged with homicide from 0.87 to 0.94 per 100,000 youths.

Despite the increase in 2024, the number is still below the 2022 spike of 95 youths charged with homicide, which is the highest in the last 50 years.
