Fleischmann Planetarium is preparing for its largest upgrade in more than a decade, with renovations expected to begin in February 2026 and a tentative reopening in August.

The project will replace the planetarium’s current projection system with a new Cosm CX LED dome, a 9-meter display Planetarium Director Paul McFarlane said will be “11 times brighter than IMAX,” with higher resolution and 180-degree views. The lobby and HVAC system will also be updated.

During the dome's closure, the planetarium will continue offering programs through a mobile dome on campus and at sites across Nevada.

“The exploration of space must continue regardless of what renovations are taking place,” he said.
