DONALDSONVILLE, La. (WAFB) - An investigation is underway at the Ascension Parish Jail after an inmate died from a severe head injury sustained when another inmate punched him over the weekend.

Charles Stafford, 40, was knocked unconscious on Sunday and died Tuesday at an area hospital, according to Sheriff Bobby Webre. The incident was captured on security footage, but the Sheriff is not releasing the video due to the ongoing investigation. WAFB did, however, have the chance to view the footage, which showed a very brief verbal interaction between the two.

“He gets clobbered, he falls, back of his head cracks, he never gained consciousness again,” Webre said.
