MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) confirmed that a train derailed into the Gunnison River around 11 p.m. Tuesday.
The Union Pacific train reportedly derailed between Whitewater and Bridgeport, near the Mesa-Delta County Line.
The sheriff’s office said that crews were unable to reach the area immediately, as it had derailed in a remote location with no direct road access.
The City of Grand Junction Fire Department said Mesa County deputies launched a drone in an attempt to find the exact location of the train.
Two engineers were on the train, but neither was injured. Firefighters said both engineers were pulled out of the water by 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Union Pacific told our sister station KKCO in Grand Junction that the train came across a rockslide. T
