Police in Delaware arrested a man in possession of an illegal machine gun and a notebook detailing plans for "urban warfare," "martyrdom" and at least one named target, according to federal officials and court documents.
Luqmaan Khan, a Pakistan-born U.S. citizen, was arrested on Nov. 24 after police approached him in his vehicle for being in a New Castle, Delaware, park after hours. According to federal court filings, Khan refused to comply with officers and was arrested.
Police who searched Khan’s Toyota Tacoma found a backpack that contained a Glock handgun, a machine gun conversion switch, body armor and "ambush" and "surprise attack" plans written in a marble composition notebook.
Khan, 25, told FBI investigators that martyrdom is "one of the greatest things you can do" and "a goal," according to court filings.
The notebook refers to martyrdom repeatedly and contains plans to target a member of the University of Delaware campus police as well as a map labeled "UD Police Station." Khan is a former student who attended the university.
Khan, a Wilmington, Delaware, resident, is charged in federal court with possession of a machine gun and possession of an unregistered firearm. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
The federal criminal complaint against Khan was filed by an FBI agent assigned to a Delaware terrorism task force. An FBI search of Khan’s home uncovered additional firearms, including a rifle with a red dot sight, hollow point pistol rounds and another handgun with a machine gun switch.
University of Delaware Interim President Laura Carlson said in a statement that Khan had been separated from the school and was banned from all university campuses pending his court case. There are no known threats to the university, Carlson said.
Attorneys for Khan could not be reached for comment. Khan moved to the U.S. in his youth, according to court filings.
