Tragic midwife died after taking too many painkillers to manage back pain

A much-loved mother-of-three was found dead in her boyfriend’s bed after taking multiple painkillers to cope with chronic back pain, an inquest has heard.

Amie Barnes, 37, a midwife who had been on a waiting list for spinal surgery at Salford Royal Hospital, spent the evening of Monday, July 25, at her partner Jack’s home in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire. The couple shared a bottle of wine and a takeaway before heading to bed, the inquest at Preston Coroners’ Court was told.

The following morning, Jack left for work after saying goodbye to Amie. When he returned later, he found her lying face down in bed. Paramedics and police were called, and Amie’s death was initially treated as suspicious due to what appeared to be a facial injury and blood on her mouth. H
