LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Teachers, parents, and students joined their voices and walked together from King Elementary School to Shawnee High School. They rallied in the cold to be the voice for their school that is on the list to be closed and sold , as Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) deals with a $188 million budget deficit.

King parent, Nicole Muex, joined in with her children.

"I want to stay here," Muex said. "This is where the community comes. This is the love."

She said her heart broke when she learned of the proposed plans.

"[The school community has] been here for me forever," Muex said. "When I didn't have food, they fed my kids and I. If I needed clothes, they did that."

Among the people marching was also a fourth-grade teacher at King Elementary, Ruthetta Ashley.
