U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M., is pushing a last-ditch effort to extend federal Affordable Care Act subsidies before their expiration Jan. 1 leaves millions of Americans with skyrocketing insurance premiums.

Luján spoke alongside Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and U.S. Sens. Peter Welch, D-Vt., and Lisa Blunt Rochester, D-Del., at a Washington, D.C., news conference Thursday, laying out a plan to bring the expiring subsidies to another vote next week. Schumer said they need 13 Republican votes to pass a three-year extension of the subsidies.

"Look, this is about affordability," Luján said. "What Republicans are doing right now is they really don't give a damn how expensive health care is going to be for the American people. Plain and simple."
