TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - A new memorial sign for the formerly enslaved at the Houston Plantation went up just within the last few days, leading activists and historians to wonder if it’s a legitimate memorial or just a business decision before selling the Capital City Country Club.
The golf course, which sits on top of the former cemetery, is owned by the City of Tallahassee. It’s leased to the Capital City Country Club, who want to buy the property for just over a million dollars.
But, city commissioners, historians and activists have raised concerns about what would happen to the cemetery and memorial if the course went from public to private hands.
