The Hamilton County Alternative Sentencing Department is warning the public about a new scam aimed at families of incarcerated individuals. Officials say scammers are calling loved ones and falsely claiming they must purchase an electronic ankle monitor before someone can be released from custody.
Victims report being told to pay between $500 and $1,000 through unofficial platforms such as Apple Cash, Venmo, and Green Dot cards. Some scammers are also using Gmail accounts and may identify themselves as “Gary Thompson.” Calls have been traced to 318-341-9001.
Authorities stress that these claims are fraudulent and remind residents of key facts about legitimate electronic monitoring procedures:
The initial installation fee for an electronic monitor is no more than $100.
