With cold weather settling in, Dallas Bay Fire & Rescue is urging residents to take extra precautions to prevent fires and carbon monoxide dangers this winter.
In a seasonal safety reminder, the department’s Fire Prevention Division outlined several steps to keep homes and families safe:
Ensure working smoke alarms are installed on every level of the home, ideally using interconnected detectors. Units should be placed at a minimum outside all sleeping areas.
Homes with natural gas or propane appliances—or an attached garage—should have functioning carbon monoxide detectors on every level.
Have HVAC systems inspected, especially natural gas furnaces, to catch any issues that could lead to carbon monoxide exposure.
Keep flammable items at least three feet away from heat sources such as
