Recess is often the highlight of the school day, but for several wheelchair-bound students at East Brainerd Elementary student, it was a part of the day that wasn't always as enjoyable.
Cecilia Perry is a fourth grader at the school. She has cerebral palsy and relies on a wheelchair to travel. She says, "there wasn't much for me to do, and sometimes my friends would come over and play with me."
For two years, Cecilia watched as her classmates climbed, swung, and played, unable to participate in the same way.
That changed thanks to Vince West, an exceptional education assistant who noticed the gap and decided to do something about it.
“I was in her classroom a lot, and when we go to recess, I just saw that there really were no playground apparatuses she could get on,” West said.
