MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Drivers may see some new dual-language signs while driving on state highways.
On Thursday, Governor Tony Evers, along with state and tribal leaders unveiled new signs in both the English and Ho-Chunk languages.
The new signs identify Ho-Chunk communities as part of Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s dual-language sign program.
The president of the Ho-Chunk Nation says the signs are a step toward preserving the nation’s legacy.
“I’m looking forward to seeing these signs and as our way of life goes, we only carry this obligation as long as we can and it gets picked up,” said Jon Greendeer, Ho-Chunk Nation president. “So the things we do here are just legacies of so many other people of so many others who paved the path for us to do something like this today.”
