NEW WATERFORD — A 57-year-old woman has been charged by Cape Breton Regional Police for allegedly embezzling over $30,000 from the New Waterford Minor Hockey Association. The police began their investigation after receiving a complaint in June, which followed an audit conducted by the Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel and Tobacco Division of Service Nova Scotia.
Authorities allege that approximately $32,700 went missing between September 2024 and February 2025. The investigation led to the identification of a volunteer associated with the hockey organization as the individual believed to be responsible for the missing funds.
The woman faces charges of theft and fraud exceeding $5,000. It is important to note that the allegations have not yet been proven in court. She is scheduled to appear in Sydney Provincial Court on December 15.
The case highlights concerns regarding financial oversight within community organizations and the importance of audits in detecting potential misconduct.
