SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. —
A sinkhole has caused part of Chesnee Highway in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, to collapse after a "large" water main failure.
After 10 a.m. Friday, Spartanburg Water said on social media that a water main break affected areas near Drayton, Mary Black Hospital, and part of Boiling Springs. Crews arrived to assess the leak and begin repairs.
Around 11:30 a.m., crews identified that the loss of water pressure was due to a large water main failure on Highway 221 at the Lawsons Fork Creek Bridge. Water pressure returned to customers in the area around this time.
Just before 5 p.m., officials said that customers reported seeing brownish water coming to their homes. Spartanburg water crews responded to flush nearby water hydrants and clear the lines.
