The saga of a near-fatal attack outside a Hopewell-Mann apartment complex has come to a close more than two years later, with a young man and woman each sentenced to more than a decade in prison.

Esmeralda Jasso-Laguna, 22, was sentenced to 12 years in prison during a court hearing Friday for her part in a 2023 attack that left a young Santa Fe woman hospitalized for more than a month.

While a Santa Fe man — 23-year-old Jonathan Castaneda — was found to be responsible for intentionally striking the woman with his pickup truck, Jasso-Laguna admitted to her "passive participation" in the crime as an accessory.
