Two people have been taken to hospital after a serious crash on the A19.

Police, paramedics, and an air ambulance were called to the major road near Holystone just after 10.40pm on Friday (December 5).

The road has been closed between the A1058 Silverlink Roundabout near Tynemouth and the A191 at Holystone for 12 hours while investigations continue.

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said it sent several vehicles to the scene, including four double crewed ambulances, and was supported by the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

NEAS has confirmed that two people have been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. Their conditions remain unknown.

A spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic incident on the A19 near Holystone shortly after 10.40pm on December 5.
