A police officer was shot during an incident on Sunday morning near Superior Middle School in Superior, Wisconsin.

According to a press release issued by Superior Police Department around 6:45 p.m., the incident happened at the middle school located at North 37th Street and Tower Avenue, with the Superior police officer being taken to Essentia-Health in Duluth, where the officer is in stable condition.

Police called the encounter with an alleged gunman a "multi-jurisdictional response to an active incident," though Superior Mayor Jim Paine wrote on Facebook that the suspect has been apprehended.

Paine wrote: "The suspect is in custody and the scene is safe. The injured officer remains in good condition and we hope they will be leaving the hospital very soon."
