Police in Derby have provided a significant update regarding an incident that led to the evacuation of around 200 homes earlier this week. The situation unfolded on Thursday when a warrant was executed at an address on Vulcan Street, prompting a precautionary evacuation of local residents.

Following investigations by the Explosive Ordnance Division, residents were permitted to return home the next day. Two men, aged in their 40s and 50s, were arrested on suspicion of explosives offences. They have been in police custody since the warrant was executed, with extensions sought for their detention as inquiries continue.

In a recent update, Derbyshire Police confirmed that both men, who are Polish nationals, have been released on bail while investigations proceed. The police stated, "There has been no change in the direction of the investigation; it is still not being treated as terror-related, and there is no information to suggest any wider risk to the public."

The investigation is focused on offences under the Explosives Act 1875. Authorities have assured the public that all materials from the address have been safely removed and stored, eliminating any risk to the community.

The evacuation involved multiple agencies, including Derbyshire Police, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service, and Derby City Council, alongside support from the Salvation Army and the Pakistani Community Centre. Residents were offered hotel accommodation if needed during the incident.

The police cordon was lifted on Friday night, allowing residents to return home. Superintendent Becky Webster commented, "While residents have been allowed back to their homes, we understand that the impact of this incident does not stop there. A team of detectives has been working round the clock, alongside specialist partners, to help understand the materials found."

She emphasised that the investigation is focused on the Explosives Act 1875, stating, "There is no information to suggest any intent to harm others or any terrorist-related matters. The men arrested have been released on strict police bail restrictions, while officers continue to work to test those materials found at the address."

Webster acknowledged the community's support during this challenging time, stating, "We know that the inconvenience caused, and the concerns raised, are not easy, and we remain committed to ensuring that updates are provided as soon as possible to keep the public informed."

The police continue to investigate the incident thoroughly, ensuring the safety and security of the local community remains a priority.
