PHOENIX — A popular Phoenix hiking trail remains closed as park officials continue to conduct work to stabilize loose boulders.

The Echo Canyon trail at Camelback Mountain has been closed since heavy rainstorms caused some erosion in October and destabilized three boulders.

During the week of Dec. 8, crews will be coring multiple holes into the boulders and injecting expanding grout, which will cause the boulders to safely separate. Crews will then additionally restore the site to its natural state.

"This plan prioritizes public safety and ensures that all work is completed as efficiently and minimally invasive as possible," city officials wrote in a statement.

The parks department will also be taking this time to complete trailhead improvements in order to avoid additional closures.
