MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — The Santee Cooper board of directors met Monday, December 8, and approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Brookfield Asset Management , a global utility company, to establish a formal feasibility period regarding the completion of two partially built Westinghouse AP1000 units at the VC Summer Nuclear Station in Jenkinsville.

Construction on those units at the Fairfield County energy-generation station was abandoned in 2017 after its owners -- Santee Cooper and South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G)/SCANA (now Dominion Energy) -- faced cost overruns, mismanagement, and scandal for increasing customers bills to finance the cost of construction. Closing down the construction of the two reactors resulted in the loss of nearly 5,000 jobs.
