On the steps of City Hall Monday, local lawmakers said sanctuary city protections are being tested, with federal immigration activity showing up in places many New Yorkers once considered safe.
“We are here today because something deeply, deeply wrong is happening,” Councilmember Tiffany Caban said.
City Council members introduced four bills aimed at strengthening immigrant protections.
One measure enforces sanctuary laws and creates a right to sue if city agencies share information with federal immigration authorities. Others would require signage to explain people’s rights, regulate E-Verify use and prevent federal immigration enforcement offices from operating on city jail property.
