With snow falling and cloudy skies, it may seem like Michigan already is in the depths of winter, but the season doesn't officially begin for more than a week.

The winter solstice falls on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025, marking the shortest day of the year. After the solstice — the start of winter — Michigan along with the rest of the northern hemisphere can start the slow march toward spring as daylight increases every day.
