India's population is rapidly aging. In 2011, the population above the age of 60 years in the country was 10.16 crore, which will increase to 22.74 crore by 2036. This means the share of the elderly population in the total population of the country will increase from 8.4% to 14.9%.
Notably, this means that 1 in every 7 Indians will be a senior citizen. Meanwhile, the estimated population of the country by 2036 will reach 153 crore.
This was claimed by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
In his statement, the MoS claimed, 'As the number of elderly people in the country increases, challenges such as healthcare, social security, economic dependence, and access to digital facilities also grow.'
