The cause of death has been released for Carrie Elizabeth Romney, sister-in-law of former US Senator and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who was found dead near a shopping mall in Santa Clarita, California.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that the 64-year-old died by suicide from blunt traumatic injuries after falling from the rooftop of a five-story parking garage near the Valencia Town Center mall.
Her body was discovered around 9 p.m. local time on Friday, Oct. 10. Investigators said they found no evidence of foul play, confirming she either jumped or fell from the structure.
Romney’s vehicle was located inside the parking garage. Toxicology tests delayed the final ruling for months, but authorities have since closed the case.
Carrie, who had been married to Mitt Romney’s older brother, G. Scott Romney, was reportedly going through a contentious divorce at the time of her death. The couple separated in May 2025. The Romney family released a statement at the time of her passing expressing their grief.
“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,” Mitt Romney said. “We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
Carrie was also the stepmother of Ronna McDaniel, the former Republican National Committee chair.
The incident cast a shadow over one of America’s most prominent political families, with Mitt Romney, age 78, serving as a former Massachusetts governor, two-term senator from Utah, and the Republican candidate who lost to Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election.
Authorities said no further updates are expected in the case.
