TRENTON, NJ — New Jersey highway drivers would be required to change lanes or slow down when approaching any stationary vehicle under a bill sponsored by Democratic Senators Paul Moriarty of Washington Township in Gloucester County and Raj Mukherji of Jersey City.
Anyone found violating the law would be fined $100 to $500.
Currently, drivers must move over or reduce speed when nearing stopped vehicles displaying flashing emergency or hazard lights, road flares or reflective triangles. That includes police cars and fire trucks, tow trucks, sanitation trucks, road-maintenance vehicles and disabled passenger cars.
