Marianne D'Amico-Ferrari has spent 29 years teaching in Trumbull. Families know her as steady and kind. Students describe her as someone who shows up for them. Now, the community is stepping up for her and her youngest daughter, Mallory.
Mallory D'Amico-Ferrari was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The diagnosis came during what should have been a bright stretch of life. Mallory ranked near the top of her class. She had a new driver's permit. She volunteered at the Discovery Museum. She was learning guitar. All of it stopped when she began chemotherapy at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Doctors hoped treatment would put the cancer in remission. Instead, Mallory’s cancer returned. After meeting with teams at Yale and Memorial Sloan Kettering, she received a bone marrow transplant. She and her mom spent 24 days in the hospital. She now faces another full year of chemotherapy.
Family friend, Pamela Brushie, has created a GoFundMe to help cover the rising cost of Mallory's treatment and to allow Marianne the chance to remain by her side as she fights it.
The campaign has raised more than $42,000 of its $60,000 goal.
Mallory's illness is complex, but complicating matters further is the cost.
Marianne has taken a leave from work to care for her. By January 1, she will have no sick or personal days left, the GoFundMe said. and her Family Medical Leave Act coverage will end. Without income, she will also need to pay $3900 a month to keep her health insurance. Marianne is a single mom and has already exhausted her savings.
Marianne has shaped the lives of students for nearly three decades. Now her own family is the one in need.
