A widespread 1 to 3 inches of snowfall is expected for much of the Northeast from the predawn hours of Sunday, Dec. 14 until about midday.

A fast-moving winter storm is set to sweep across the Northeast this weekend, with forecasters warning of accumulating snow and travel disruptions from Washington, DC to Boston.

The National Weather Service and AccuWeather both predict the first widespread snowfall of the season for the I-95 corridor, starting overnight Saturday, Dec. 13 into Sunday, Dec. 14. The snow is expected to arrive in the predawn hours Sunday, potentially mixing with rain before changing over to all snow as colder air settles in.

While the exact snowfall totals will vary, the system is poised to deliver a swath of wintry weather across major cities, including Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. New York City and Long Island are likely to see lower totals, but even there, forecasters say residents should be ready for slick roads and possible delays.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said, “More snow and bitterly cold winds are on the way for millions across the Midwest and Northeast this week.”

The snow is part of a series of "clipper" storms rolling out of Canada and colliding with waves of Arctic air. The latest system will try to strengthen as it reaches the Atlantic coast late Saturday and into Sunday, according to AccuWeather.

"Because the coldest air may be delayed a bit near the Atlantic coast, it is not quite a sure bet for all snow along the I-95 corridor of the Northeast this weekend," AccuWeather Senior Storm Warning Meteorologist Eddie Walker said.

Still, forecasters emphasize that this could be the first significant snowfall event for many in the region. "There is the likelihood for the first accumulating snow of the season in the Interstate 95 corridor from Philadelphia to New York City and Boston this weekend,” AccuWeather Senior Director of Forecasting Operations Dan DePodwin said.

Drivers and airline passengers are urged to prepare for possible delays as the storm moves through. The snow is expected to wind down by midday Sunday, with clearing and colder conditions following behind.
