SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - As residents clear snow from their property after a snowstorm, Sioux City Fire Rescue says there is one part they shouldn’t forget.
Heavy snow and plows clearing the streets can cover fire hydrants, which makes them harder to access in an emergency.
Sioux City Fire Rescue recommends clearing a 3-foot radius around hydrants to give firefighters space to work in an emergency .
Lieutenant John Nelsen says everyone can play a part in keeping the city safe.
“What we recommend is almost like adopting a hydrant if there’s a hydrant on your block, which there should be, getting together with the neighborhood maybe and digging the hydrant out,” Nelsen said. “It’s not one person’s responsibility, it’s all of our responsibility.”
