Scientists have identified a chemical in a popular sweet treat that could help to slow down ageing. Researchers say the 'exciting' finding could help unlock the everyday foods that 'hold clues to healthier, longer lives'.
The study found a 'significant association' between levels of a chemical found in dark chocolate and slower biological ageing. Researchers looked at levels of the compound theobromine in the blood and compared them with markers which indicate that how old the body is in terms of health and function.
While experts aren't advising people to eat more chocolate, they said the finding could lead us to 'important discoveries' towards ageing and rare diseases.
