WASHINGTON — DC firefighters are working to remove eight feet of water from the basement of an apartment building in Southeast on Wednesday afternoon. The flooding conditions forced five people out of their homes.

According to DC Fire and EMS, crews were first called to the two-story apartment building in the 1400 block of Savannah Street Southeast just before noon for a report of flooding conditions.

Firefighters used pumps to remove the water from the building's basement. The cause of the flooding has not been made public.

The National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Region is working to help those residents who have been displaced by the flooding. It's not clear how long they will be out of their apartments.
