TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Every holiday season parents and gift-givers face the same question: Is this toy safe?

Lithium batteries power many of today’s most popular gifts — from remote-controlled cars and tablets, to hoverboards and festive decorations. They’re compact and powerful, but when damaged, misused or disposed of incorrectly they can overheat, catch fire, or even explode.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency , lithium batteries are favored because they’re smaller and lighter than other rechargeable batteries, all while still delivering the same amount energy. That makes them ideal for mobile, compact devices — but it also increases the need for careful handling.
