PHOENIX — It’s more than 4,000 miles from Phoenix and considered to be one of the most mysterious places in the world. Now, anyone with an internet connection can explore Easter Island and its giant moai stone statues.

Dr. Terry Hunt, a professor at the University of Arizona School of Anthropology, has made countless trips to the remote island for nearly 25 years. Now, he and a team of researchers have created the first-ever digital 3D model of Rano Raraku — the main quarry where the island’s famous moai statues were carved.

The team used drones to capture more than 11,000 images of the quarry, then stitched them together to build a highly detailed 3D map. Nearly 1,000 moai appear in the model, each cataloged with information about its size, position and location.
