NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Tennessee Supreme Court threw out a lawsuit filed by two citizens who challenged the constitutionality of General Assembly district maps adopted by the Republican Party in 2022.
According to Sen. London Lamar’s office, the opinion reverses decades of court precedent in Tennessee and raises the bar for a citizen to challenge unconstitutional districts to a legal standard.
On the state Senate map, the state Supreme Court became the first in the nation to rule that a citizen of a voting district lacked the legal right to challenge the constitutionality of their own district, Lamar’s office said.
