Driving law specialists have demanded changes to legislation regarding certain pets. The matter emerged after the Department for Transport responded to a petition calling for a change in the law.

The campaign demanded that drivers who hit a cat be required to report the collision and take the animal to the nearest vet. The parliamentary petition garnered backing from more than 10,000 people, compelling the Government to provide an official response.

Ministers said they have "no plans" to introduce such modifications. They referred to existing legislation that mandates drivers stop and report collisions involving what are classified as working animals.
