PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - Disgraced former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is now looking to Washington for help.

According to the Sun Time s, records from the Department of Justice show a clemency case has been opened for Madigan.

The longest serving state speaker in history, Madigan was charged in 2022 with bribery conspiracy, wire fraud among others after an investigation was conducted.

After a four-month trial, the 83-year-old was convicted in February . He was sentenced to seven and a half years in June.

He has appealed his conviction, but an appeals court ruled he must stay in a West Virginia prison during the process.
