PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - Wednesday, Australia became the first country in the world to ban social media for children under age 16 . 25News spoke with community members in Peoria and East Peoria to see if they think bans like this would be a good idea here.

One Peoria parent, Zekiah Williams, said he wants his child to be at least 18 before using social media.

“Social media is an influence. It’s a big influence on kids, everybody for real for real, but it is a big influence on kids. I honestly think that it shouldn’t be presented to kids at such a young age,” Williams said.

He also praised Australia’s ban, calling it a good idea. Williams was far from the only Central Illinoisan who thought a ban for kids would be a positive thing.
