Drought monitor shows significant improvement

Great news for Central Texas water resources! The latest U.S. Drought Monitor, released on Thursday, Dec. 11, shows a notable easing of dry conditions across the region compared to the previous week.

Across the viewing area, we have seen a 9% decrease in the area experiencing a moderate level of drought (D1). Even more encouraging, the overall area in any drought category (D1-D4) has seen a 10% decrease in coverage. This improvement is likely thanks to recent, albeit localized, rainfall events.

While the most extreme conditions are concentrated southwest of the Austin-metro area, you can see the overall reduction in the extent of the yellow (Abnormally dry) and light orange (Moderate drought) areas.
