MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A man convicted of rape is back in custody after he was accidentally released from prison.

A warrant was issued Wednesday for Cameron Brooks’ arrest after the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says an omission in his paperwork allowed him to be freed from jail by mistake.

Deputies say Brooks was taken into custody around 10 a.m. Thursday in Downtown Memphis.

Brooks, 23, pleaded guilty to a 2022 aggravated rape charge on Tuesday. During the same court appearance, a judge dismissed a separate aggravated rape charge.

SCSO reports that there was no legal hold for the charge he pleaded guilty to. This is the responsibility of Shelby County Information Technologies, a government agency that is separate from the sheriff’s office.
