Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday warned of what he called a “demographic invasion” in the state, asserting that others communities would be “finished” if the Muslim population crosses 50 percent in Assam. Speaking at the Agenda AajTak event, Sarma said the indigenous Assamese population is facing an existential crisis due to decades of unchecked migration.
Citing statistical projections, Sarma said Assam’s Muslim population, estimated at around 38 percent in 2021, could reach 40 percent by 2027 due to a consistent decadal growth rate of 4–5 percent since 1961. He warned that if the Muslim population crosses 50 percent, others won’t remain. Only they will remain.
