The holiday season is a peak-busy period for major U.S. mail carriers.

More than 2.3 billion packages are forecast to be delivered this holiday season, according to ShipMatrix data. But what happens if one of those cardboard boxes or plastic mailers arrives on your doorstep unexpectedly?
