NIANTIC, Conn. (WFSB) - Steady winds and powerful gusts made an already cold day feel even more bitter along the Connecticut shoreline, with conditions expected to worsen after sunset.

Wind gusts reached up to 50 mph in some areas, creating choppy conditions on the water and prompting warnings for residents to secure outdoor decorations.

The constant wind has been hitting the shoreline all day, with periodic gusts that intensify the cold conditions.

Despite the harsh conditions, some residents ventured outside to enjoy the boardwalk in Niantic. Friends Lea Arnold and Charlotte Jessuck, both of Waterford, took a walk along the waterfront.

“It’s cold, but it’s not terrible. It’s warm from the sun,” Arnold said.

Jessuck agreed the sunshine helped, but noted the wind was challenging.
