Applications for extreme weather shelters are open in Louisville, but few nonprofits have applied for the new approval required after a Beechmont business was shut down last year over opening its doors to people freezing on the street.
Shane Schlatter, director of Exodus Family Ministries, is working to get his organization approved before dangerously cold weather arrives. Temperatures are expected to drop to near zero by Sunday.
"It is extremely life threatening in the winter, whenever someone is trying to stay warm, and they're soaking wet," Schlatter said.
About 1,800 people are living on the street on any given night in Louisville, according to the city's Coalition for the Homeless.
